Led by Classic Most Valuable Player Patrick Swilling, Brother Martin captured the 2009 Murphy Oil – Chalmette High Christmas Classic with a win over Helen Cox in the championship game on Dec. 23 at the Owl gym.

The Crusaders moved through the tournament with wins over Belle Chasse to open the Classic, then a semi-final victory over host Chalmette to earn a spot in the championship.

Cox started out with an upset win over St. Augustine, then knocked off talented Slidell to play Martin.

In addition to Swilling, the Crusaders added Schane Rillieux and Jamon Gray to the all-tourney team.

The Cougars of Cox placed team leading scorers Jason Francois and Joe Ealy on the team as well as their point guard in Brockton Bush.

Tevis Parker and Brennan Reynard from Slidell were named to the all-Classic team as well as Belle Chasse’s James Wright and David Thomas of Hahnville.

The single-game high scorer of the Classic was Cox’s Jason Francois, while James Wright of Belle Chasse cashed in with 25 points.

Slidell knocked off Chalmette to earn the third place award. The Tigers could easily have been in the championship game, losing to Cox 51-49 with a last second shot the Cougars moved on and the Tigers would play for the third place spot.
