First dancer to be in Sports Hall of Fame

For the first time in its 18-year history, the St. Bernard Sports Hall of Fame will induct a dance instructor in its March 16 ceremony. Gloria Rando Doran of Arabi, has been moderator of the Mt. Carmel High School Carmelettes for the past 37 years. Under her leadership, the Carmelettes—a team of 55 – 60 dancers— have
won six national dance/drill championships, and 25 state championships.

In 1971, Doran completed a dance degree, through the Dance Masters of America organization. In 1976, she was hired to teach history at Mt. Carmel Academy and the principal at that time was impressed by Doran’s dance certification.

“They had just started the dance team the year before, and a nun was actually the moderator,” Doran explained with a laugh. “So the principal saw I had a dance degree and thought I would be a good fit for the Carmelletes.”

One unique aspect of the Carmellettes, is that all of the award-winning choreography is done by team officers.

“We’ve never hired anyone to do our choreography,” she said. “When I was younger, I used to do all of the choreography but now I put a lot of the responsibility on the team officers.” Doran says she was “totally shocked” to be tapped for induction.

“I’ve attended several of the dinners, but was really surprised to be nominated,” she said. “It’s really an honor, this is the first time that people are giving recognition to the athleticism in dance.”

She explained that like other team sports, dance is dependent on team-work, unity, endurance and a spirit of competitiveness.

Doran has lived in St. Bernard Parish since 1955, and grew up on Aycock St. She has been married to Raymond Doran for 39 years, has four children, four grandchildren and one on the way.

The 18th Annual St. Bernard Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held at the Fred Sigur Civic Center on March 16 at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $400 for a table of 10 and $40 per person, which includes dinner and an open bar (beer and wine).
