Knights of Nemesis: Q & A with the Royalty

“Goddess Nemesis” Amy Beasley Gonzales, and “Royal Knight VIII” Ricky Gonzales

The 9th Annual Knights of Nemesis parade will be hitting the streets on Saturday, February 2, 1 p.m., and The St. Bernard Voice was able to sit down and get to know this year’s royalty, Ricky and Amy Gonzales.

The Voice: How did you get involved with Nemesis?

Ricky: I’m a board member and have been involved with Nemesis since 2004.

The Voice: Tell me a little about Nemesis. What are some things people don’t know about the krewe and social club?

Ricky: Most of us rode in the Krewe of Gladiators, and eventually we decided to branch off and make our
own organization. We’re starting to change pace and make things more family-oriented. In the beginning it
was a men’s only organization but we’re really a mixed organization now. Something a lot of people don’t realize is that all of our events—the fishing tournament and luau— are all open
to the public, you don’t have to be member to attend.

The Voice: Amy, what are you most looking forward to about the parade?

Amy: Most years for Nemesis I’m standing on the side with my kids, but I’m excited to be able to ride along
and look out and see everyone, and watch the parade from a
different angle.

The Voice: Your costumes look great, they’re so elaborate!

Ricky: Royalty is actually in charge of getting their own costumes together. The parade planning is year round, so we’ve been working on the costumes for a long time.

Amy: My dress and Ricky’s tunic were actually made by two St. Bernard residents, Tina Bordelon and Linda Boos. The dress took them about two months to make. Linda and I picked out a pattern and sent it to a seamstress who sent back a raw dress. From there Linda and Tina did all of the embellishments.

The Voice: What are some special throws that parade goers can look forward to?

Amy: We’re throwing special medallion beads with our pictures on them, cups with the Nemesis logo and
throw shirts.
