The St. Bernard Irish Italian Isleños Parade is currently filling slots for princesses, sponsors, floats and riders in preparation for their 13th annual parade on April 6.

The parade currently has 36 floats signed up, but the parade’s President, Chad O’Neil, is hoping to add another few to the schedule.

Princesses, aged 11 through 17, will be treated royally with a pre-parade reception that features a sash-and-tiara ceremony, t-shirts and a meal. They will proceed to ride the parade on their own float.

Those looking to ride on existing floats can sign up as individuals or in groups of any size.

Business sponsors will be featured on the back of the official parade t-shirts. For $500, the sponsor will be featured prominently on the shirt and in large print. $250 provides sponsors with a business card-sized section on the shirt and $100 will grant them a small space at the bottom of the shirt for the business’ name and address.

The parade was founded 13 years ago by Walter Boasso, who “wanted to mix the typical Irish-Italian parades around New Orleans with the Isleño community, which is, of course, unique to St. Bernard Parish,” according to O’Neil.

O’Neil has ordered 250,000 pounds of cabbage, potatoes and other produce to toss from the floats.

Those interested in signing up princesses should contact Mary O’Neil at or 504.638.4476.
