The St. Bernard Parish Council honored several retiring public officials during the June 19 council meeting including Deputy Clerk of Court Lena T. Nunez, Col. Joseph Licciardi of the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office, Clerk of Court Lena Torres, and Sheriff Jack A. Stephens.

Parish President Dave Peralta thanked the retiring public officials “for their decades of service to St. Bernard Parish.”

Councilchair Guy McInnis personally thanked Stephen’s– the longest running Sheriff in Louisiana– for his 28-year dedication to St. Bernard Parish.  McInnis recounted his early days in St. Bernard Parish Government, when he was first hired as an accountant by Jack Stephens.

“I came in the first day thinking I was going to teach you something, and you ended up teaching me a whole lot,” McInnis said with a smile.

Lena Torres first started working in the Clerk of Courts office at age 19, and was elected Clerk of Court in 1988 after the death of her husband, who held the postion since 1956. Torres, who is turning over her position of clerk of court to Randy Nunez, addressed the crowd and council, saying what an honor it has been to serve the people of St. Bernard Parish for so many decades.
