The Sheriff’s Office and the Knights of Columbus will jointly hold a free bicycle safety course for St. Bernard Parish residents at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 10 at the Knights’ Rummel Council 5747 Hall at 2107 Paris Road in Chalmette.

Capt. Errol Schultz, who heads the bicycle safety program for the Sheriff’s Office, will give the course, which is the first of its kind held in the parish since Hurricane Katrina. Schultz had previously taught courses since 1992.

“This isn’t a bicycle registration,’’ Schultz said. “This is a course to teach children and adults the rules of the road and responsibilities’’ in safely riding bicycles. “I think people will get a lot out of it,’’ he said.

The course, open to all ages, should last less than an hour, Schultz said.

Participants don’t have to bring their own bicycles or helmets, he said.
